A Welcomed Encore to Wynn Macau

Albert Wong, September 13, 2010

Wynn Macau opened its new Encore wing just this April and this brings the number of rooms at Wynn to 1014.  The Encore wing is all-suites and an ordinary suite is 1100 sq ft.while an Encore Villa is 7000 sq ft. Thus is Macau-style luxury where the tiny SAR of China in the shadow of Hong Kong boasts of the largest volume of bets at its many casinos. With big money, eating is of the highest standard.

I visit both Macau and Las Vegas quite frequently. Not that I gamble much, it is the entertainment and restaurant options offered in both cities that.are really attractive to me. With huge income from casinos, ultra luxury in Macau is more affordable. It can be said that this affordability is somehow subsidized by casinos.

Whether it is in Macau or in Vegas I always check into Wynn. Wynn is .my choice because it has comfortable, airy, and brightly lit and decorated rooms that are more like rooms of a city luxury hotel than a usually darkly decorated casino hotel.  If Macau also has Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons now, I feel amiss if I stay in a Macau hotel without a casino, whether using the casino or not is another matter.

It is the restaurants rather than the casinos that bring me back to Wynn Macau.

Wynn Macau boasts of 8 excellent restaurants.

Wing Lei, the Cantonese restaurant, has one Michelin star to its credit for the consecutive two years. The chef, Chef Peter Chan, is famous for his various innovative dishes and here you have choices of dishes that are unlikely to be had elsewhere. But it is no fusion, I am glad, and the food is always authentic and tasty.  At lunch they do great dim-sums, the best anywhere, and there is a special bargain dim-sum menu for lunch.

But ultimately it is the new signature Chinese restaurant, The Golden Flower, that is the real “must-try”. Under Chef Liu Guo Zhu, an acknowledge Master from Beijing who also worked in Hong Kong teaching at the culinary school there, the restaurant’s chefs can offer not only the famous Tan cuisine from the Imperial Qing Dynasty, but also alternatively Shandong and Sichuan dishes all cooked to perfection and always beautifully presented on the table.  Guests who are not ready for the big Tan Cuisine Tasting Menu costing up to GBP150pp, or to pay for it for that matter, can also enjoy a good family meal at this most exquisitely decorated of restaurants without reaching for the deep pocket.

Golden Flower Tea Bar

A dinner here, probably with individual teas to match each dish devised by a professional Tea Mistress, not unlike a sommelier in a top Western restaurant.. The service is excellent and attentive, under the very charming American returned manager Emily Wang. A meal here is not just another meal but a lifetime experience.

The restaurant is still new for the last appraisal but I am sure it will get its due of 2 or even 3 Michelin stars in due course.

Dessert

I have also tried the new noodle restaurant, the coffee shop, and the Red 8 café, all to my satisfaction. In the new 99 Noodles restaurant, one can sample a large menu of unusual items of noodles that are not generally available. A special kind of noodle is chosen, and then you match it with a soup of your choice from the soup menu.  The manager or any waiter can offer a good suggestion to a confused customer. There is indeed a lesson to be learnt here on the art of Chinese noodles.

You can’t have an article without mentioning the Italian restaurant Il Teatro as well which over the last year has picked up a Michelin Star under Chef Anthony Alaimo.
