Australia Gourmet Traveller announces top 100

Australian academy member Pat Nourse is also chief restaurant critic for Australian Gourmet Traveller, the magazine which publishes the country’s only national restaurant guide. The launch of the latest edition of the guide, sold bundled with the magazine’s September issue, also introduced its latest top 100 listing of Australia’s best restaurants. Sydney’s Quay, currently the top-rated Australian restaurant in the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best (at 37), and the number-one restaurant in the last two editions of the guide, was supplanted by Cutler & Co., a Melbourne restaurant opened in 2009. Here’s the press release from the magazine:

Melbourne’s Cutler & Co. restaurant has been named Restaurant of the Year at the Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards, the highest accolade for any Australian restaurant. The Awards are the hottest ticket on the dining calendar and were attended by the cream of the food scene at an exclusive ceremony at the Flower Drum in Melbourne.

Cutler & Co., the brainchild of chef and owner Andrew McConnell and designer Pascale Gomes-McNabb, was named number one, topping a fiercely competitive field of more than 400 establishments in the new edition of the Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide, the country’s only national restaurant guide.

“Cutler & Co., our Restaurant of the Year, has the casual-luxe vibe of a uniquely chic dining space, exquisite food crafted by one of Australia’s most thoughtful and technically accomplished chefs and service delivered with real panache by one of the most energetic floor teams in the country,” said Gourmet Traveller editor Anthea Loucas. “These qualities alone make it exceptional. On top of this, it’s fun. Seriously great fun. And ultimately, isn’t that what the most memorable dining experiences are all about?”

The winners are:

Restaurant of the Year – Cutler & Co., Melbourne

Regional Restaurant of the Year – Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld, Vic

Best New Restaurant – Ortiga, Brisbane

Best New Talent – Matt Stone, Greenhouse, Perth

Maître d’ of the Year – Peter Sullivan, Aria, Sydney and Brisbane

Wine List of the Year – 1889 Enoteca, Brisbane

Bar of the Year – Eau-de-Vie, Sydney

Sommelier of the Year – Franck Moreau, Est., Sydney

Outstanding Contribution to the Industry – Cheong Liew, chef, Adelaide/Melbourne
