What’s in the name: Corner House is named for E J Corner, who resided in the property for 13 years during his 16-year tenure as the Assistant Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
Who’s the chef? Jason Tan previously held the position of executive chef at Sky on 57, where he spent five years. Prior to that, he cut his teeth at prominent fine dining restaurants including Les Amis in Singapore and Robuchon Au Dôme in Macao.
Best dish in the house: Don’t miss the cevennes onion done four ways – sweet onion purée with sous-vide egg topped with grated Manjumup black truffle; wafer-thin onion tart crowned with onion confit and Parmesan; crisp onion chip; and onion tea with an emulsion of onion confit. The whole menu is created around the concept of ‘gastro-botanica’ – a contemporary cuisine that puts equal focus on the proteins and the botanical elements on the plate.
Famous diners: When Chinese President Xi Jin Ping and his wife were in Singapore in November 2015, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife Ho Ching hosted a lunch for them at Corner House.
Why the venue matters: The restaurant is set in the heart of the lush Singapore Botanic Gardens, which was conferred with Unesco World Heritage Site status in July 2015.
