...Moscow! After a successful return to in-person events in 2021, with The World’s 50 Best Restaurants held in Antwerp, Flanders, last October, 50 Best announces its destination for the 2022 programme of events: Moscow in Russia. Here’s everything you need to know

It was 2016 when The World’s 50 Best Restaurants first embarked on its international tour from London, where it had been headquartered since 2002, and took the programme of events surrounding the revelation of its annual list to New York, USA. Since then, the tour has become a worldwide adventure, with awards events Melbourne in Australia in 2017, Bilbao in the Basque Country of Spain in 2018, Singapore in 2019 and Antwerp in Belgium in 2021 (after a year’s hiatus in 2020). For 2022, 50 Best is ready to shine a light on a new, emerging gastronomic destination: the Russian capital, Moscow.

Set to be staged next July, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 programme – the most important annual gatherings of chefs, restaurateurs, media and gourmets in the gastronomic calendar – will include inspirational presentations by some of the world’s most recognised culinary leaders, thought-leadership discussions, the signature awards ceremony as well as plenty of chances for travellers and consumers to discover the host city’s fascinating culinary scene. The programme will culminate in a live countdown of the restaurants voted into the 2022 list from No.50 to No.1, which will be livestreamed to a global audience.

After Noma’s second iteration was crowned The World’s Best Restaurant 2021, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, in Antwerp, the restaurant will join the likes of Mirazur, Osteria Francescana and Eleven Madison Park as part of the Best of the Best group of previous No.1s – meaning that the 2022 edition will see a new restaurant take the crown.

Moscow has enjoyed rising popularity among gastro-travellers in recent years, with two restaurants that have led a wave of culinary innovation voted into The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021. Vladimir Mukhin – who was profiled in season 3 of Netlix’s popular documentary series Chef’s Table – leads White Rabbit, where he showcases his inventive new Russian cuisine. Twins Garden, with identical brothers Ivan and Sergey Berezutskiy at the helm, demonstrates the potential of the country’s home-grown ingredients in dishes such as pumpkin soup with sea urchin caviar and quail’s egg.

The list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, will be created from the votes of its global Academy, an ever-evolving, gender-balanced organism formed of more than 1,000 restaurant experts who each year vote for their best dining experiences. Formed in equal parts of food writers, chefs/restaurateurs and well-travelled gourmets, with at least 25% of its members rotated each year, the Academy represents the widest and most influential group of culinary authorities to be polled.

None of the employees of the organiser, or of any of the sponsors associated with the awards, is part of the voting Academy. The process is independently adjudicated by professional services consultancy Deloitte, which performs in-depth procedures to confirm the integrity and authenticity of the voting and resulting ranking.

50 Best’s role in promoting restaurants and showcasing culinary talent will be more important than ever in 2022, continuing to support the hospitality sector by inspiring diners to seek out exciting gastronomic experiences once again, whether near or far. The organisation will take the opportunity in 2022 and beyond to amplify diverse voices and positive messages, foster progressive discussion and cross-border collaboration, and encourage greater gastronomic discovery and exploration.
