The web presence for Penang's Backdoor Bodega claims that it's an "overpriced pin shop". But those in-the-know will tell you that when you find the bar, which is one of the city's finest speakeasies and located inside a streetwear shop called The Swagger Salon, you should buy one of their cheeky lapel pins to get a free specialty cocktail. Serving up playful hijinks since opening in 2016 – during covid, the bar packaged "lockdown boredom buster" cocktails with amusing names like "Pfizermeister," for example – the passionate bar team offers a large cocktail menu that includes classics, modern creations and alcohol-free options. It's not unusual to find regional ingredients like belacan, nutmeg, mishti doi,and yoghurt in the drinks, mixed in fun and engaging combinations. A small bar that is a delight from start to finish.
