One&Only Le Saint Géran

Poste de Flacq, Mauritius

The hotel that started beach retreats. This secluded spot, with its mile-long powder white beach and palm-fringed pool, was one of the first hotels to offer a luxury fly-and-flop experience in the Indian Ocean. Opened by South African hotel tycoon Sol Kerzner in 1975, its castaway looks and initially unique offering cemented the iconic blue sea stay's legendary status. Kernzer later left the One&Only brand, but the group’s first beach hotel remains. The dazzling, 142-room offering became a blueprint for others in the genre. All eyes are on the azure waves around– pared-back, contemporary interiors, and colonial-style architecture play second-fiddle to the location’s natural beauty. Other iconic touches include thatched parasols, in-room fans, whitewashed villas and a diverse food offering characterised by its private dining experiences and the globally renowned names it has hosted. Note the L’Artisan bakery from US chef Matthew Kenney. Guests are loyal to Le Saint Géran for its reliably impeccable service and its home-from-home atmosphere. It’s not the glitziest Indian Ocean offering today but it ticks all the boxes for old-school elegance and discrete simplicity. Note that the hotel closes in low season.
