What was once the former holiday home of an Italian duchess, Hotel Esencia on Xpu-Ha Beach in Tulum is now one of Riviera Maya’s premier boutique stays. After being purchased in 2014 by Hollywood producer Kevin Wendle, the hotel was reopened as the ultimate beachside getaway, with 51 whitewashed rooms across a 50-acre estate, where swimming costumes from dawn to dusk are encouraged. All of its interior spaces are open-air, spacious and effortlessly chic, with each of the rooms possessing a private terrace and some with their own private pools. But all have prime access to the golden sands. Days start with hot coffee, tea and a basket of pastries delivered to the rooms, followed by complimentary sunrise yoga sessions, tennis and water sports. Alternatively, low-intensity spa sessions and lounges on the beach are equally encouraged by the hotel. Many guests visit between March and October for its unmissable spectacle, where guests are encouraged to witness sea turtle hatchlings make their first voyage into water from the hotel’s beach.
