The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon

Bangkok, Thailand

Forget the monochromatic mundanity of so many of Thailand’s hotels: this sci-fi-feeling downtown joint takes funky décor, a cool crowd and a fast-and-furious lifestyle to celestial heights in the hedonistic city. Bright, bold and brilliant, the signature style of The Standard name sings loudly in its high-flying Asian flagship. Its 155 rooms are spacious and light-flooded, and furnishings and interiors take retro styles and offer a refresh through rich, contemporary hues. Bathrooms are unexpectedly stark, perhaps offering a moment’s respite from the dizzying disco of the rest of the hotel. Back on track, amenities are high-quality, if not expansive; alongside the gym and parasol-necklaced terrace pool sit a ballsy collection of dining spots that aim to be loud and outlandish. Hence, the live music-filled Parlor bar, the 'British'-style Double Standards pub and a steakhouse eatery inspired by US burger culture. Headline-grabbing hues aren’t the half of it, though: at a cloud-tickling 76-stories high, the Mexican-inflected Ojo restaurant is a glamourous, audacious city stunner. Take a few steps higher still and you reach The Standard’s Sky Beach, Bangkok’s highest alfresco rooftop bar. Heady stuff.
