French meets Italian in casual basement surroundings

Where are we? Despite flanking the antique shops and art galleries of Hollywood Road, Neighbourhood is as discreet as they come. Found in a little courtyard, this French-Italian restaurant is the latest from serial restauranteur David Lai, serving food that resonates simplicity and style.

The vibe: We’re talking minimalist white and grey tones across a simple yet graceful layout. It’s a cosy, unpretentious setting where the food is largely left to do the talking.

About the chef: Hong Kong-born chef and restaurateur David Lai learned his trade on the west coast, cooking in a number of restaurants across San Francisco before heading back home to play a part in opening Spoon by Alain Ducasse. With Neighbourhood, Lai has created an intimate, pan-European escape with focus on both seafood and local produce.

On the menu: Lai, who also owns the acclaimed Fish School in Sai Ying Pun, changes the menu on a weekly, sometimes even daily basis, so it’s very much a case of “you’ll find out when you get there”. Recent highlights have included wild boar garganelli, bone marrow and kale risotto, and bouchot mussels in a green curry broth.
