The art of simple things, done well

At 29 Gough Street, in Hong Kong's busy NoHo district, Mius makes a quiet case for restraint. Designed by Kevin Yiu of Minus Workshop for Shelley Tai (the recipient of this year's Altos Bartenders' Bartender Award), this Hong Kong newcomer resists the visual noise of its neighbourhood. Instead of spectacle, it offers precision: a compact, mid-century-inflected room shaped around warm oak, glancing metal, stone, soft daylight and a sense of careful calm not dissimilar to the energy Tai – dubbed 'the goddess of bartending' – brings.

The project began with an awkward inheritance in the form of former home-appliance retail space, tight on space and complicated by a low central beam. Yiu's response was not to disguise these constraints, but to make them architectural. The beam has been cladded in oak and transformed into a defining spine that organises the room, directs sightlines and divides the space without interrupting its flow.

That sense of order is carried through the bar's material language. Rusty-toned oak gives the interior warmth, while silver metallic accents catch and redirect light, preventing the palette from feeling too heavy. Travertine marble appears in thick slabs as high tables, grounding the room with a raw, veined tactility. The 4.3-metre single-piece island counter is the centrepiece, lending the bar's modest footprint a sense of ceremony.

Mius is also a study in edited atmosphere. Yiu has described the importance of blocking external light pollution from the street-facing windows, allowing the bar to shut out the surrounding district's glare while admitting a softer daylight. By day, the space feels unusually bright for a cocktail bar – more neighbourhood living room than nocturnal den – and by night, layered lighting takes over, with the Lee Broom Chant chandelier casting a low, sculptural glow in a semi-private corner.

This restraint is deliberate. Mius doesn't lean on themes or theatrics, instead choosing to stay close to Tai's stated ethos of 'simple things, done right', which is manifest in its clear lines, honest materials and a layout that lets the making of drinks remain visible. Service is split across four counters to ease pressure at peak hours, but the mechanics are kept discreet with building services tucked into hidden channels within the beam and walls and oak joinery concealing any wiring. The room appears calm because its complexity has been absorbed into the architecture.

What makes Mius a worthy winner of the SevenRooms Best Bar Design Award as part of Asia's 50 Best Bars is not any single flourish, but the coherence of the whole. In a district often defined by density and after-dark drama, Mius proposes a different kind of bar design: approachable, tactile and quietly exacting – proof that the most memorable hospitality spaces often come from doing less, better.
