Saddle up for Shanghai’s buzziest bar

Located on Shanghai's bustling Jinxian Road, Pony Up is a masterclass in neighbourhood hospitality. Founded by Dre Yang, who cut his teeth at Shingo Gokan and Steve Schneider's famed bar The Odd Couple, this is a cosy space bedecked in walnut panelling and studded with American diner-style velvet orange booths looking over a cartoon equestrian artwork at the centrepiece of the bar. Thanks to its compact nature, the bar thrives on an infectious community energy – so much so that staff routinely hand out mini shots to those waiting in line outside.

While the energy remains electric into the late evening, Pony Up is just as much of a hoot in the daylight, opening its doors each day at 1pm. During the daylight, drop by for a Chinese-infused classic twist, such as its daiquiri made with Longjing tea and starfruit, or a one-sip martini. At night, Yang's menu runs amok with creativity, staring with its presentation as the book is designed as a cartoon theme park map where drinks are reimagined as rides and rollercoasters. In the Jurassic Gone Wrong, gin, rose beancurd, cacao, pecan, camellia and vermouth come together in a roaringly floral and delicious combination. Looking to wind down the night? Opt for the Sunset Cruise, made with Scotch, masala chai, pineapple and asparagus juice.

When it comes to food, dishes match the drinks pound-for-pound. Think comforting American diner-style plates jazzed up with Asian ingredients, such as a patty melt served on milk toast or fries topped with furikake and wasabi and lime mayonnaise.
