Sultry sips in historic Beijing

Set inside Beijing's hottest new hotel, Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Tiao takes its name from the historic hutong alleyways in which it resides. Away from the noise, crowds and bright lights of Qianmen Street, Tiao succeeds in slowing down the pace across its two-storey sanctuary. In its main bar downstairs, moody lighting, dark furnishings offer the ideal place for hours to pass by, while its al fresco terrace upstairs serves as the perfect spot for people watching the surrounding streets.

History is woven into every fibre of Tiao. Upon arrival, a small welcome drink acts as an indicator of the bar's sense of place, with a flavour profile inspired by the yoghurt commonly sold on streets around Beijing served in a bespoke miniature claypot used to age baijiu. Next, guests can dive into its narrative-driven menu Worlds Apart, which reinvents the 450-year legacy of the surrounding local area and places it into parallel historical timelines.

The signature Caochang Hutong cocktail is a prime example, blending jasmine-infused baijiu with frozen green Sichuan peppercorns and a hit of fermented sourness inspired by traditional Guizhou hotpot. Away from China, the Dancing Notes looks to southeast Asia with a combination of rum, Thai green tea and an umami-rich tom yum extraction. By framing local Chinese spirits and ingredients within familiar, global landmarks, Tiao removes the intimidation factor often associated with traditional local ingredients and spirits.
