Mexico City
Bar Mauro might be a new addition to the beating heart of Mexico City’s hip La Roma neighbourhood, but inside, the concept is pure 1970’s Italy. During those halcyon days, the eponymous Mauro Mendoza was partial to an afternoon aperitif. Today, his grandsons Ricardo and Eduardo Nava honour his legacy with their Milanese oasis. Black and white photos of Mauro in stylish, tailored suits keep watch over the space while mirrors, subway tiles, and sleek, modernist touches remind the vogueish guests of Milan’s status as fashion capital. For good measure, the surrounding shelves display dozens of vermouths and amari from the bar’s Italian origins.
Things get even more Italianate with the drinks menu: some creations honour the home nation’s bountiful standards such as the Negroni 1929 (gin, red vermouth, Campari, cacao nibs, strawberry), while others employ regional favourites to blend originals like the Banana Adonis (sherry, oloroso, red vermouth, banana liqueur). Likewise, Mauro’s kitchen offers all of Italy’s iconic accoutrements including an impressive array of charcuterie, cheese, and olives. However, locals will cite the humble cheeseburger as a must-try. The culinary dichotomy is simply one example of the lounge’s concept: ‘where golden age meets modern nostalgia.’
