Superbueno
New York
A joyful homage to Mexican-American culture
Ignacio 'Nacho' Jimenez is an icon of the New York City hospitality scene and his bar, Superbueno, represents the two decades he's spent in Gotham as well as his Mexican heritage. The East Village hotspot is frequently packed with a swanky, distinctly New York crowd. However, the casual, celebratory atmosphere is decidedly Mexican – think a festive, airy vibe punctuated by primary colours and neon lights. The bartop is lit by the signature, swinging globe lights, but true illumination comes from head bartender Kip Moffitt's inventive creations.
Technical mastery meets traditional Mexican ingredients here to deliver bright, delicious cocktails. Marquee creations include the Salted Plum & Tamarind Milk Punch (charanda, ayuuk, salted plum and tamarind, lojana tea, milk) and Mole Negroni (mole fat-washed mezcal, amari blend, sweet vermouth, xocolati bitters). True to the bar's inclusive philosophy, the list also includes Mexican beers and wines as well as an impressive line-up of non-alcoholic drinks.
The many regular guests enjoy rotating slushies and tepache on tap, while chef Cyed Adraincem's food line-up keeps them coming back with elevated classics such as the bar's signature Birria Grilled Cheese (braised beef, Mexican cheese blend, cilantro lime mayo, cotija, lime, bolillo bread; served with consommé).
The cantina's most impressive offering can't be found on any menu – it is defined by warm hospitality. Nacho can frequently be spotted welcoming guests, whether that entails pouring water or pouring shots. Coupled with the elite drinks programme, the overwhelming sense of feeling welcomes encapsulates the very best of Mexican-American hospitality.
