Restaurant Monterrey
Jujuy, Argentina
At the extreme northwes of Argentina near the border with Bolivia, Hotel Huacalera sits within the dramatic Quebrada de Humahuaca mountain valley in the Andes, not far from the iconic Seven Colours hills of Purmamarca. Within this charming colonial-style boutique hotel is the Restaurant Monterrey, an elegant, dark-lit dining room with purple upholstery that matches the red-and-purple tones of the surrounding mountains. It serves regional dishes such as red corn soup with dried goat’s meat and local trout with Andean potatoes, while there’s a great list of wines from Jujuy. Be sure to bag a table in front one of the large glass windows, which look out onto dramatic scenery including the strikingly striped mountain rocks and cacti as tall as a house. Fun fact: Huacalera is a stone’s throw from the Tropic of Capricorn, one of the earth’s five major circles of latitude.
