Llao Llao Hotel
Rio Negro, Argentina
Patagonia’s Llao Llao Hotel is a standard bearer of South American hospitality. Opened by architect Alejandro Bustillo in 1940, the grand lodge’s 15 private hectares between Lake Nahuel Haupi and the base of the Cerro Lopez and Tronador mountains are a wonderland for families, weekenders, and group events. Evocative of a Canadian mountain retreat, Llao Llao offers 228 rooms, studios and suites spread over two wings. A wood exterior offsets the snow covered mountainscape with gabled peaks. Inside, hemlock floors and Argentine built cherry and pine furniture create a rustic feel. Oversized fireplaces draw travelers to the Lobby Bar for evening drinks while the Winter Gardens floor-to-ceiling windows make the lake a perfect backdrop for afternoon tea. Four other restaurants provide traditional Patagonian and Argentinian dishes as well as lighter cafe favourites and sushi. Regulars rave about the hotel’s private 18 hole golf course in Nahuel Huapi National Park and the extensive spa services. The grassy slopes also reveal treats like a heated solarium, lakes and rivers for watersports, an archery range, tennis courts and a team of pro guides to organise the outings.
