Tsaghkunk Restaurant & Glkhatun
Tsaghkung, Armenia
Perhaps you’d be forgiven if you can’t name a signature Armenian dish. But after a visit to this special restaurant – as much cultural ambassadorship as a place to eat – you’ll come away singing its praises. While set an hour’s drive from capital Yerevan in a humble 1,000-year-old village, the atmosphere hits a contemporary note with its glass windows, cocktail bar and modern Scandi-style furnishings. In contrast, the food is firmly traditional. Visit the adjoining Gikhatun to see lavash bread making in a traditional tonir and try it yourself while nibbling on cheeses and meats. Then move onto the restaurant proper for a seven-course parade of local favourites – including panrkhash, combining lavash with decadent melted cheese and onion, from chef Arevik Martirosyan. All is washed down with a large selection of Armenian wines, from pet nat to rich reds.
