Southern Ocean Lodge
Hanson Bay, Australia
After the original Southern Ocean Lodge was devastated in a bushfire, owners James and Hayley Baillie once again tapped up the talents of architect and Kangaroo Island native Max Pritchard to rebuild and improve the award-winning property. The 25 suites and public spaces stand side by side in a gentle curve along the coastline, offering an unobstructed view of the shoreline. The interiors are simple, with immaculate white walls, local limestone and blackwood, putting the vistas centrestage, especially when enjoyed from the outdoor terrace or plunge pool. Food is locally sourced and generous in volume: two-course breakfasts, three-course lunches and four-course dinners change daily to not only showcase the terroir, but also to fuel energetic excursions, while the carefully curated wine list spotlights bottles from Kangaroo Island and southern Australia. When you’re not out exploring the island (hiking, seal spotting, dolphin swimming and wine tasting) book into the spa for some downtime. Glass-fronted treatment rooms mean you can wake from a massage-induced slubmber gorgeous views across the bushland, whilst the sauna, hot and cold plunge pools are set outside to maximise on natural immersion.
