The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia

An emerald water installation, tinkling glass chandelier and curvaceous golden stairway act as your arrival committee in The Ritz-Carlton’s ground-floor lobby. That is before they sweep you up in an ear-popping, high-speed elevator to the 80th floor sky lobby, where you check in. From here, it’s black marble, tall ceilings, indigenous art and jaw-slackening cityscapes all the way. The hotel resides in the top 17 storeys of the uber-modern tower, set in Melbourne’s CBD. Interiors wise, the hotel delivers a visual tour of Melbourne — from the geometric Art Deco patterns and the gilded touches that reference the city’s gold rush, to the collection of First Nations and local art and contemporary local design in the form of lighting by Christopher Boots and The Flaming Beacon. It shouldn’t work, but it really does – and better yet, it channels a sense of calm throughout. Generously sized rooms are characterised by abundant light, gold accents, walnut and plush furnishings. Edged by triple-height glass, the inviting spa pool is a highlight of any stay. Meanwhile cinematic Atria uses the same glass trick to seemingly float its guests amid the landscape beyond. Low arm chairs and high-flying lighting bring added breadth to the sense of space, though don’t detract from the imaginative modern Australian food served up here. On the lofty 80th floor, intimate Cameo bar delivers a concise list of cocktails including some rare, antique spirits.
