Visitors have been coming to the Austrian Alps for centuries to hike through wildflower-carpeted meadows in the summer and to swoosh down snow-covered peaks when winter arrives. Schloss Fuschl, on the shore of Lake Fuschl, built in 1461 as a hunting lodge and summer residence for the Archbishop of Salzburg, has welcomed guests to the area since it opened as a hotel in 1947. Now, it’s an upscale Rosewood resort, where visitors can revel in the fairytale charm of a castle that has more than a few stories to tell – but with every modern comfort imaginable. The hotel brand carried out an extensive renovation, creating 98 elegantly-appointed guest rooms including 42 suites and half a dozen chalets, but retaining nods to the past – the vaulted ceilings, the mounted antlers and the Old Master paintings on the walls. Breathe in the crisp alpine air on a guided hike, swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake, discover the art of smoking freshly-caught-by-you trout with the master fisherman or learn how to make apple strudel. Alternatively, lean into doing nothing at Asaya Spa, where the treatment list is extensive and there’s both an indoor and swim-out heated infinity pool. Dining runs the gamut from the main restaurant, which serves Salzkammergut flavours and does an excellent schnitzel, to a pretty afternoon tea salon and a seasonal lakeside spot with beach club vibes.
