Izumi

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Everything about Izumi screams attention to detail, from the zen-like setting in a gated courtyard up a short driveway to a building decorated in detailed concrete work, meticulously carved by hand, and the airy dining room of tables set spaciously apart to prioritise diners’ comfort. Chef Masayuki Nakajimaya hails from Hokkaido and has overseen the kitchens since Izumi opened in 2010, importing fish from his native Japan, which means that sushi and sashimi are a highlight here, whether modern-style (soft-shell crab roll) or individually priced sashimi of scallop, salmon and hamachi. Elsewhere is a line-up of Japanese classics (salads, soups, tempura, noodles) with the most interest on the short list of chef’s specials: sautéed madai (red sea bream) with creamed spinach, say. Prices are high for Bangladesh, but portions are large, while lunchtime sets of teriyaki, katsu, udon and soba offer a cheaper way in.
