Gangtey Lodge Bhutan
Nubding, Bhutan
After founding Malikha Lodge in Northern Myanmar, Khin Omar Win and Brett Melzer didn’t expect to open another hotel. But after a sensational ballooning trip in Bhutan's Phobjikha Valley, the duo set out on a three-year project to build the 12-bedroom Gangtey Lodge. Designed in the style of a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, the hotel sits atop a nature reserve with cascading views across cloud-grazing mountains, Himalayan blue pine forests, and a 17th century monastery. Inside, rooms take design cues from traditional Bhutanese culture and the surrounding wilderness, creating a cosy retreat with an earthy palette, layers of leather, wool, and wood, fireplaces and huge standalone tubs set in front of floor-length windows. Opt for dinner and drinks under the high ceilings of the Main Lodge, or book a private dining experience in one of the hotel's traditional woodsheds, whilst the traditional stone bathhouse is the perfect spot to soak limbs after a day’s exploring.
