Restaurante Manga

Salvador, Brazil

With a breezy terrace overlooking the ocean there’s no need for the food at Manga to be quite so excellent, but husband-and-wife team Katrin and Dante Bassi lavish pride on everything they do. The restaurant is full of personal details – think photographs of Katrin’s family farm in Germany – and this combined with the fact the building is a three-floor townhouse creates a cosy, convivial atmosphere. However, those expecting homely comfort food will be surprised. Salvador-native Dante has worked at top restaurants throughout New York and his multi-sensory tasting menus are playful, irreverent and daring (a la carte is also available). A signature dish of crispy chicken feet served with paprika cream that takes 12-hours to prepare is great to snack on alongside a cachaça cocktail before the meal. Looking for your new favourite brunch spot? Sunday breakfast is an important ritual in both German and Brazilian culture and the couple offer a delightful spread of home-cured charcuterie, fresh pastries and various breads on the terrace until noon.
