Uxua Casa Hotel and Spa

Trancoso, Brazil

It was love at first sight – and perfect timing – when former Diesel creative director Wilbert Das discovered the Bahian seaside town of Trancoso in 2004. After two decades leading the iconic denim brand, Das arrived seeking a well-earned retreat. While there, he came upon the idea for UXUA, pronounced ‘oosh-wa’, meaning ‘wonderful’ in the indigenous Pataxó language: not a hotel exactly, but a collection of original fishermen’s houses stationed around the town’s Unesco-protected main square. In keeping with Trancoso’s creative vibes and hippy history, plus UXUA’s sustainable ethos, Das designed the collection of 16 casas with an eclectic mix of raw untouched wood, reclaimed materials, tropical colours, and local arts and antiques. All food is sustainably and locally sourced, and at Vida Spa treatments use UXUA’s own homegrown homemade all-natural products. Surf, kayak, or play beach volleyball along Trancoso’s eight beaches, and on the smallest and closest, you’ll find UXUA Praia beach bar, where laidback, sustainable cool reigns, and drinks are served from a salvaged fisherman’s boat beneath a traditional straw roof.
