Fogo Island Inn

Joe Bats Arm, Canada

The Flat Earth Society long preached that the Canadian fishing outpost of Fogo Island was a literal ‘corner of the earth’. While leveraging the beauty of the island’s remote location, Fogo Island Inn presents a far more progressive experience. Social entrepreneurship was a driving vision for founder Zita Cobb. Raised by a local fishing family, Cobb went on to earn a fortune in fibre optics, and then shifted focus to helping her hometown on Fogo, Joe Batt’s Arm. Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect Todd Saunders' vision channels the village's signatures into angular, modernist design. Local homes on stilts inspire exposed Corten steel pilings, and an X-shaped blueprint, heavy on windows, makes for postcard views of the North Atlantic. The 29 rooms and suites are a gallery of local, handcrafted artisanal work from Elaine Fortin’s ‘boat inspired punt chair’ to colorful quilts. Likewise, the restaurant elevates locally foraged, caught and grown ingredients into haute cuisine. Additionally, neighbours work as guides for the hotel, helping arrange excursions like cod fishing, starlit snowmobiling and pottery-making. Profits are even dispersed to the village. A second community exists among the hotel guests, largely couples and solo travelers. An onsite cinema, hot tubs, a sterling library and an art gallery offer lots of space to mingle.
