Arlo Wine & Restaurant

Ottawa, Canada

There’s a playful, anything-goes vibe at Arlo, which launched during the pandemic, with a handful of outdoor tables, a bathtub of low-intervention wines, and a chalk-scrawled menu cooked on the grill by chef Jamie Stunt and his crew. It’s evolved since then, of course, though some things remain the same, including the friendly welcome and commitment to natural wines (a passion for sommelier Alex McMahon, its jazz-loving co-owner). While the wine list’s long and varied, the menu is concise, with four or five mains and starters and a handful of well-judged snacks; order the anchovy-topped Lardo toast while you ponder what to pick. Dishes often riff on bistro classics, from schnitzels (generous and textbook-crisp) to ribeye steaks to share – though if it’s on the menu, try the duck frites, slathered with green garlic aioli.
