Behind a pared-back frontage, lit with pink neon at night, chef Mandel Hitzer's laidback restaurant is a long-standing neighbourhood favourite. It’s been a fixture on the corner of Princess Street for well over a decade, pairing wine from small-batch producers with boldly creative small plates, which draw their inspiration from every corner of the globe. That might mean wild shrimp dumplings with kimchi butter sauce, grilled steelhead trout and smoked dashi, or herb-sprinkled ‘everything’ lavash, with labneh, candied trout and confit shallots. Desserts, while often daring, are reliably delicious: a birch and blackberry napoleon, perhaps, or a sublime tres leches cake with a scoop of homemade masa tortilla ice-cream. There's a prix fixe menu in the dining room, but it's a la carte at the bar, where the cocktails call on inventive – often home-made – infusions, syrups and preserves.
