Almaviva
Maipo Valley, Chile
- No.34 The World's 50 Best Vineyards 2025
Almaviva in the Puente Alto sub-region of Chile's Maipo Valley began as an audacious dream between Bordeaux's late, great Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Eduardo Guilisasti, chairman of Concha y Toro, who wanted to create Bordeaux-quality red blends in the Southern Hemisphere. A pioneer of terroir-driven wines in Chile, cabernet sauvignon is king here and given the royal treatment by head winemaker Michel Friou, Almaviva's longtime custodian. Personalised tours of the 65-hectare estate that begin in the garden of the manor house and move to the vineyards can be booked by appointment. Be sure to check out the impressive 'grand chai' (barrel vault) and wine library, where you can sample older vintages of Almaviva. The estate offers various tours and tasting packages, including vertical tastings of three back vintages. Visits are pricey – the vertical tasting costs £199 – but they offer a chance to try one of Chile's greatest icon wines.
