With its claim to fame as Guangzhou’s first speakeasy, Hope & Sesame is tucked away behind a traditional Cantonese café – and is a new entry on Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2019. The hidden theme may be traditional in the bar world, but the modern decor and techniques employed in this much-lauded den are anything but. Innovation comes from sous-vide infusions, clarification and in-house re-distillation. Far from being overt in its scientific pursuits, however, on the surface everything here appears simple and refined. There’s also a further hidden bar within the bar where guests will discover live musicians entertaining the city’s jazz enthusiasts each night of the week.
