Como Laucala Island
Laucala Island, Fiji
Far flung, fabulous and serving up a daily dose of vitamin sea like it’s going out of fashion, Como Laucala Island is a singular, offshore wonder in Fiji’s remote Melanesia region. It’s one of the world’s biggest private island escapes; a tropical idyll where all-out luxury reigns supreme, drawing in sybarites keen to throw off the shackles of the everyday from near and far. Upon arrival, as the ocean’s palette of blues yields to golden sands, a lush thicket of frondescence rises to envelop a placid retreat comprising 25 villas. Sprawling the island in harmony to their wild roots, the naturalist abodes – all thatched roofs, ocean tones and raw materials from the surrounds – are more like full-scale homes. You could easily come to drop and flop (indeed, the glass-framed infinity pool is one of the world’s most iconic), but across the island adventure abounds. Think 18 holes of golf amid the old coconut plantation, horse rides along the beach, tours of the 240ha organic farm that enlivens the hotel’s restaurants, diving and deep-sea fishing among other temptations. It’s worth noting that a three-night minimum applies, but that shouldn’t be an issue, once you’re in situ it’s unlikely you’ll want to leave.
