Jan

Nice, France

Chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen brings an artistic eye honed by his past career in photojournalism out to play at his eponymous Nice restaurant. Jan has coal-black walls, flickering candelabras, baroque oil paintings and tables groaning with glinting cutlery, creating a moody, dramatic backdrop to the South African chef’s creative cooking. The intimate, 24-seat restaurant plays with South African and French flavours on set menus that draw from both the chef’s African heritage and the warmth of the French Mediterranean cookbook. Dishes might include blushing duck breast beside a sweet poached peach half and a dressed-up iteration of the traditional South African sponge cake, malva. Embark upon the cheese course and a location change is required; the tour de fromage takes place in the art-hung Maria across the road before diners retreat back to Jan’s sultry depths to finish their meal.
