Schloss Johannisberg
Rheingau, Germany
- No.2 The World's 50 Best Vineyards 2025
A Neoclassical palace crowning a hill first planted with vines in 817, Schloss Johannisberg became the world's first dedicated Riesling winery in 1720, later creating the Spätlese, Auslese and Eiswein classifications of the grape. If you want a true taste of Riesling, this is the place to go: begin in the eighteenth‑century castle before delving down into the cellars, where wines mature in wooden barrels crafted from the estate's own forest. The 900‑year‑old vaults of the original abbey, storing some 25,000 bottles, hold vintages dating right back to 1748. Outside, you can sample the estate's famed Rieslings at the vineyard tasting booth alongside light bites. The Schlossschänke tavern offers commanding views across the estate, which also hosts open‑air jazz and classical concerts throughout the year.
