The Alley Bar

Accra, Ghana

What was once an alley in the Nyaniba Estates is now an airy, light-filled bar, with a pared-back, post-industrial vibe and plants hung from the steel girders. It’s the kind of place that caters to all-comers, with a drinks list that runs from casual beers to chilled bottles of Moët, via a dozen classic cocktails: an espresso martini, say, made with Jamestown Coffee beans, or a head-spinning Alley Long Island. For something more local try the Soo Aphro, which combines triple-distilled palm spirit with tart, tangy sobolo, made from hibiscus petals. Crowd-pleasing eats run from sliders and jerk chicken to sharing seafood platters, while regular DJ nights amp things up a notch. The whole place turns into a dancefloor, spilling out on the terrace, where no-one’s averse to a singalong if and when a banger drops.
