Villa Bokéh

Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a Unesco World Heritage city in southern Guatemala, known for its pastel-painted buildings, historic churches and the 17th-century canary-yellow Santa Catalina arch. Not to mention the volcanic vistas in every direction. Villa Bokéh is a former artists’ residence-cum-hacienda on the outskirts of this characterful metropolis, hidden amongst six acres of lush gardens. The classic colonial design has been given a fresh spin, with charming results. The 15 suites are named after different colours, the walls, floors and furnishings incorporating nods to the hue – the Onyx suite’s monochromatic detailing is particularly striking. Local artisanal touches, from the woven pillows to the vibrant artwork and hand-carved furniture, add to the appeal. Many rooms come with private balconies, though you can also catch the view of the imposing Agua Volcano from the cool of the gardens, the fountains, lily ponds and lake. The pool is another oasis, inviting guests to lounge beneath cerulean parasols sipping the signature bougainvillaea lemonade; so too the spa where the treatment menu reflects its Hispano-Mayan roots. The restaurant Bokéh 3.1, overseen by Narcos Sáenz, serves a Guatemalan-nouvelle menu using indigenous ingredients.
