Aaharn

Hong Kong, China

David Thompson is famous for being one of the world’s most astute interpreters of Thai cooking at the likes of Long Chim in his native Australia and the much-missed Nahm in London. His Hong Kong outpost occupies part of the Tai Kwun development, which has seen the former Central Police Station renovated with art galleries, shops and places to eat – although there’s nothing heritage-feeling about Aaharn’s minimalist decor and modern art. ‘Aaharn’ is the Thai word for ‘food’ and while spicing isn’t turned up to authentically Thai levels of heat, there’s no faulting the quality of ingredients flown in from Thailand on the short, seasonally-changing menu, nor the striking presentation of plates which show a deft balance of vivid flavours. Canapés to share as starters are followed by dishes served family-style on the à la carte and there are tasting menus if you’d rather the kitchen did the choosing for you.
