Fans of Tokaji sweet wines should make a beeline for Szepsy, where the family’s winemaking history goes back to the sixteenth century. Indeed, it was present winemaker István Szepsy’s ancestors who developed the distinctive method behind Tokaji Aszu wines in the seventeenth century (a favourite among emperors, popes and tsars) and he was not only instrumental in the style’s renaissance from the 1990s onwards but latterly promoting the region’s drier styles. Vineyard and winery tours are by appointment only and, ideally, culminate in a trip to the family’s restaurant, Percze – named after one of their most prized vineyards, it serves modern Hungarian food with full-height windows providing views out onto the picturesque village of Mád.
