Izumi Assagao
Assagao, India
The original Izumi Bandra has long been a favourite with Mumbai’s gastronomes seeking superior Japanese food. So imagine the delight of Goans, when a second outpost opened on the Assagao ‘restaurant road’, in north Goa. The indoor-outdoor space is located in boutique guesthouse Botanique, in the shadow of giant palm fronds and overlooking a swimming pool, while huge windows flood the inside with light. It would be a mistake not to start with one of the cocktails, which are concocted with ingredients such as yuzu, shiso leaves, umeshu, pickled shimeji and nori. Chef Nooresha Kably (who co-founded Izumi with her husband Anil Kably) learnt her trade at Tokyo Sushi Academy and a ramen school in Yokohama, before recently revisiting Japan on a journey of further culinary discovery. The result is a menu of sushi, sashimi, yakitori, gyoza, ramen and rice bowls that is often described as the best in Goa. The Hamachi truffle ponzu with wasabi jelly? Do it.
