A fixture of the high-end Chennai dining scene for more than 30 years, Dakshin specialises in the cuisine of the six states of South India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Lime-green and chilli-red walls hung with jewel-encrusted paintings, and sculptures and mirrored pillars set the traditional scene in the spacious dining room for cooking served traditionally on banana leaves. Vegetable dishes are very much to the fore, though there are also chicken and fish dishes and an aromatic lamb trotter curry from Tamil Nadu. Thali plates and a trolley of South Indian tiffin snacks offer a convenient way to try as many dishes as possible, while Dakshin’s dedication to sourcing the most authentic dishes extends to researching cooking methods with South Indian housewives. Wine matching is another strength and there is dancing to live music from flute and tabla players.
