6 Ballygunge Place
Kolkata, India
A 20th-century mansion from the end of the British Raj is the setting for a culinary experience that is widely believed to offer some of the best Bengali cooking (both classic and contemporary) in Kolkata – an almost invisible cuisine on the city’s dining scene when this groundbreaking restaurant opened in 2003. Era-appropriate interiors (teak chairs, gramophones) stay the right side of quirky without descending into vintage pastiche, with two floors of dining rooms topped with a rooftop for parties, all attended to by staff in crisp white uniforms. Buffets are a popular way to sample as much of the cooking as possible, though the long à la carte rewards an equally lengthy inspection, from the signature daab chingri (prawn curry cooked inside a green coconut) to Bengali hilsa specialities: try the fish steamed in mustard sauce in a banana leaf. Non fish-eaters get chicken and mutton dishes and there are excellent vegetarian options, too.
