Ukiyo is a philosophical concept dating from Edo-period Japan, referencing a floating, fleeting world that is in constant flux due to the impermanence of life. But rest assured, you don’t need a philosopher’s degree to enjoy this Yerwada spot. Under soaring high ceilings, accented by lattice wall panels and contemporary art, the buzz of dinnertime socialising unfolds as couples, colleagues and groups of friends tuck in an extensive menu of contemporary Asian fusion. Tofu croquettes and chicken karaage precede teriyaki mushroom tacos, prawn-stuffed okonomiyaki pancakes or tempura lobster – plus dim sum, gyoza, ramen and the inevitable sushi. When you can’t decide, an omakase menu of five to seven courses makes life easy for you, and even comes with two cocktails included; though do note that advance booking is required. A place to be seen as much as a place to dine.
