Mama San

North Kuta, Indonesia

Scottish chef Will Meyrick is behind two of Denpasar’s most acclaimed restaurants: high-end Sarong and the fast and frenetic Mama San, which opened in 2010. It’s the sort of concept that is familiar in London, Sydney or New York but less common in Bali: pan-Asian small plates served up in hip, rough-and-ready surrounds. A hand-painted mural of the fictional Mama San overlooks a warehouse-style space pulsating with buzzy energy; upstairs is a lounge bar for twists on classic cocktails. The menu of Southeast Asian street food extends as far as China and India; expect dim sum and samosas alongside zingy salads, fragrant curries and slow-cooked meats in flavour-forward dishes that are not for the faint-hearted. Desserts such as the signature pavlova with mango mousse are Asian-flavoured spins on sweet-toothed European favourites.
