Piazzetta Milù
Castellammare di Stabia, Italy
It all started back in 2003, when Michele and Lucia Izzo threw open the doors to their pizzeria in Castellammare di Stabia on the sun-drenched Sorrento coast (hence the name Mi-lù). When their three grown-up sons returned to the fold, the restaurant adapted. Maicol, who has worked with the likes of Alain Ducasse, is now on the pass; Emanuel is sommelier; and their other brother Valerius is the restaurant manager. A welcoming family atmosphere resonates throughout the double-height space. Don’t expect to know what you’ll be eating before you arrive or how many courses. There is only one tasting menu, a collaboration between all the Izzos, which is described as ‘an adventure’ and designed as a surprise. Guests start the meal in the wine cellar, before moving through to the dining room, perhaps via the glass walled kitchen. There are six different menus per year, each one completely new – the only thing you can be sure of is seasonality and locality. Interesting past dishes have included tagliolini made from cardoncelli mushrooms, topped with white truffle, where the sauce is designed to be mopped up with a mushroom masquerading as a slice of bread; and tarte tatin with banana and peppers.
