Don Alfonso 1890

Naples, Italy

Housed in a Neapolitan palace with wine (more than 25,000 bottles), aging cheeses and hams in tunnels dating back to the 15th century, this restaurant oozes character. The decor – whether you eat in the pink-and-white dining room or outside in the leafy garden, all yellow cushions and striped awnings – is designed to evoke the sunny atmosphere of southern Italy. One of the pioneers of farm-to-table cuisine, this family affair sees Livia Laccarino and her son Mario in the dining room, with other son Ernesto in the kitchen as head chef and father Alfonso tending the 17-hectare vegetable garden. Menus are based around Campania and the Amalfi Coast's glorious produce. Red mullet with fluffy gnocchi and capers sits alongside, handmade tortelli with local red prawn tartare and guinea fowl with saffron cream, while citrus-infused profiterole is served in a hollowed-out lemon.
