Dal Pescatore
Runate, Italy
In 1926, fisherman Antonio Santini and his wife Teresa opened a humble restaurant on the banks of the Oglio river. It was called, simply, Vino e Pesce ('wine and fish'), with the couple fishing, working in the kitchen and serving tables. Over time, it expanded from being a tavern to a trattoria and its name changed to Dal Pescatore or 'from the fisherman'. A century on, this polished destination is run by the fourth generation of the family. Though it is now littered with accolades, the philosophy of warm hospitality and impeccably fresh fish is still firmly in place. The kitchen is overseen by Nadia Santini with the support of her son Giovanni. You'll find family favourites perfected over the generations, the likes of tortelli di zucca with butter and Parmigiano-Reggiano; agnoli in meat broth with red wine; and pigs trotters with crispy savoy cabbage, as well as more contemporary dishes, such as foie gras with peaches in a fragrant passito wine sauce; crayfish terrine with caviar; and citrus-scented soused eel.
