Agli Amici
Udine, Italy
As with many of the best Italian restaurants, Agli Amici – set just outside Udine between the Alps and the Mediterranean coast – is a multi-generation business. It began life in 1887 as a café-tobacconist. Now, almost 140 years later, it's overseen by head chef Emanuele Scarello and his sister Michela, who runs the front-of-house as the maître d' and sommelier. The menu draws on the family's lifelong relationships with local artisans, incorporating the finest ingredients from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and celebrating each one's essence in slick interpretations of classic dishes. Seasonal tasting menus include the likes of white asparagus with lemon and caviar alongside more unusual flavour combinations such as langoustine served with rhubarb and raspberry or risotto of scallop, almond and cherry plum. There's an equally imaginative plant-based tasting menu – or choose a la carte, the likes of gnocchi with chives and caviar, and custard and apple tart with ricotta gelato.
