Past and present coalesce at this boutique hotel in Kurashiki, a historic merchant city on Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. Set across a kimono merchant’s residence from the Meiji era and a newer annex, the style abides by Japanese minimalism throughout – think tatami flooring, cedar wood, shoji doors, exposed wooden beams and even semi open-air bathtubs in certain rooms. More ryokan than hotel, Yoruya has just 13 rooms and few facilities, instead encouraging guests to experience the attractions beyond its dark timber façade in the city’s charming Bikan Historical Quarter – an area characterised by willow-lined canalways, stone bridges and 400-year-old storehouses. Nonetheless, guests can still dine in the comfort of the hotel at Yoruya’s counter dining restaurant, which celebrates Japan’s micro-seasons with multi-course menus focusing on fresh seafood, locally reared beef and regional sake.
