Kyoto’s charming alleyways are teeming with traditional ryokans, but when a prominent global brand like the Ritz-Carlton comes to town, it carries expectations of greater space, superior service and markers of its signature style. The brand’s property on the banks of the Kamogawa River has all three – but importantly hasn’t abandoned its sense of place in the process.
