Shiroiya Hotel

Maebashi, Japan

This boutique hotel is a canvas of creativity in central Maebashi, its gallery-like interiors promising immersive stays like no other. The hotel extends across two buildings – a 1970s concrete structure designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, and a more modern grass-covered tower. The hotel has 28 rooms, but it’s the four artist-designed suites that steal the show – from Jasper Morrison’s soothing wooden-panelled sanctuary to Leandro Erlich’s surreal space filled with plumbing pipes. The screen-free suites allow guests to truly absorb the interiors, which extend into the communal spaces. An LED installation illuminates the hotel’s four-storey atrium on a nightly basis, and guests can tour the experimental hotel in their own time thanks to a complimentary audio guide. Imaginative fine dining, a discreetly hidden tea room and custom-designed s put the finishing touches to this one-of-a-kind experience.
