If ever there was a masterclass in Japanese Zen design, Numazu Club is it. But let’s start at the beginning: Senbon Masubara is a centuries-old pine grove in Numazu, a city just one hour from Tokyo, in between Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay. Recognising its natural beauty, in 1913 business scion Zembei Miwa commissioned the master carpenter Yuzaburo Kashiwago to build a sukiya-style teahouse amongst the majestic trees - and Numazu Club was born. It’s had many guises since - in 2006, the building was restored and a villa was added to the site, reopening as the eight-bedroom hotel we know today. The minimalist design is everything you’d imagine it to be: walls are made with packed earth and soil, pale woods are in abundance, with a neutral palette and low-profile furniture (some of the guest rooms come with a futon). Everything here feels organic and very natural. Meals are served in the former sukiya-style teahouse, which is made up of a series of elegant Japanese-style rooms, including a tea room with a tatami-mat floor. The hushed spa has an indoor bath, open-air bath and using water that’s sourced from the fresh water springs of the Kakita River, one of the clearest streams in Japan.
