Proving it's never too late to chase a dream, Japanese winemaker Yuki Hirayama put years of experience in Burgundy to good use in 2019 when he returned home at 60 to open boutique winery 98Wines in Yamanashi, where he makes red, white and rosé from native grapes koshu and muscat bailey A. Visitors to the tasting room can enjoy postcard perfect views of Mount Fuji while sipping their way through Hirayama's output. Book in advance to secure your spot. After the tasting you can explore the local vineyards and hiking trails, or enjoy a craft beer at the brewery next door. Make a weekend of it by booking yourself into the nearby Stay366 in the forest, where Yamanashi cuisine is paired with Hirayama's wines. Each room is uniquely designed and geared towards relaxation. Enjoy fireside drinks, lazy mornings on the terrace, or a stay in the annex, which has its own private garden.
